Achieving a Lifelong Dream, as Dorky As It Is
Ever achieved a dream or life-goal? This past weekend, I did. Admittedly, it was really dorky, and I paid the price...but, it was worth it! So what'd I do?The cool thing about radio is that while it is a career, it's also kinda a hobby. And like any hobby, you become obsessive about the little things, like headphones, sound, and microphones. And that's where this story goes. I've always had a dream of owning/using a very specific microphone. Not sure why, just one of those dorky obsessions I guess. And this specific microphone you've most likely seen before, dubbed the "Elvis Microphone". (Real name is the Shure 55sh.) In town, it's the microphone for the Announcer for the Rough Riders.
After filling in as announcer for the Titans a couple weeks back, I was asked to fill in for the Riders announcer last Saturday. Nothing like NEVER having done it before, adding in the pressure of doing the job for a playoff game... with an extremely loyal fan base. But the perk, I got to use that dream mic, so all was good in the world! And the Riders won... so even better! Now, to buy one, or just hope they ask me back...
Sidenote: And from what fans/staff have said, I guess I did okay. However, thanks to an extremely intense game, I really killed my voice, as you may have noticed on air Monday.
