Authorities in the Wapello County town of Ottumwa made an arrest in a Thursday night murder in about an hour... the latest in a string of violence in the city.

According to KCCI, Ottumwa police were called to a home in the 100 block of North Ward Street just before 10 o'clock Thursday evening. When they arrived, they found a male gunshot victim who later died at Ottumwa Regional Hospital.

Around an hour later, police arrested 18-year-old Jacob Heckethorn at his home on North Birch Street in Ottumwa. He's being held without bond in the Wapello County Jail, charged with both first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Earlier this month, a shootout with police in Ottumwa left one person dead and another in custody. August 3rd, The Des Moines Register says Ottumwa officers responded to a report of shots fired on South Webster Street. Police found three suspects behind an elementary school and one of them shot out the window of the police chief's vehicle with a rifle. Police then returned fire, killing 35-year-old David Roy White of Fairfield. 32-year-old Michael Paul Bibby and 23-year-old Dalton Wayne Cook, both Ottumwa residents were charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary, along with six counts of attempted burglary. One man suffered a gunshot wound from the suspects, prior to the shootout with police. He survived his injuries.

July 26, 22-year-old Kelsie R. Thomas of Ottumwa was charged with murder in the death of her 5-year-old daughter. The Des Moines Register says a criminal complaint stated Thomas,

while committing child endangerment, set in motion a series of events that caused the death of the victim that manifested an extreme indifference to the victim's life.

The girl, Cloe Marie Chandler, died July 19 after police found her unresponsive in Kelsie Thomas' home on North James Street.
