If you've ever been cruising through Iowa City on eastbound I-80 and noticed three giant heads staring at you off in the distance, you should know that they're actually a work of art!

The first time I drove back to Michigan after moving to Iowa, I was driving on Interstate 80 and I noticed some weird faces staring at me from the side of the highway. That was back in November of 2014, and I am just NOW figuring out exactly what those faces are. At first, I thought they were famous people (one of them looks oddly like Will Ferrell, in my opinion), but I was wrong. They are actually pieces of art!

Artist John Cerney from Salinas California is the man behind the faces, which showed up here in 2010. The random faces are made of paint and plywood and depict an angry man, a confused man, and a disappointed woman. The subjects are actually friends of his. Cerney says that the artwork isn't meant to convey a specific message, but to encourage people to ask questions. Cerney is considered a "highway artist," and has done a lot of roadside artwork in California, as well as Iowa, Kansas, Arizona, and other states.

And NOW YOU KNOW!

A big thanks to Steve at 30th Century Bicycle in Iowa City for the AWESOME up-close photos!
