In honor of this joyous occasion, we are celebrating with some pizza fun facts and photos!
Taco pizza, veggie pizza, mac & cheese pizza, even just plain pepperoni: ALL PIZZA IS DELICIOUS. And that's why we need to dedicate an entire day to it. Here are some fun facts about pizza, accompanied by photos I've taken of different pizzas that I've tried:
Over 3 BILLION pizzas are sold in the US every year, plus an additional 1 billion frozen pizzas
17% of all restaurants in the United States are pizzerias
36% of people consider pizza to be the perfect breakfast.
Americans eat approximately 100 acres of pizza a day or about 350 slices per second.
The largest pizza ever made was 122 ft. 8 in. in diameter. It required 9,920 pounds of flour, 198 pounds of salt, 3,968 pounds of cheese, and 1,984 pounds of tomato puree.
The first ever pizza place was Antica Pizzeria, and it opened in Naples, Italy in 1738. Gennaro Lombardi was the first Pizzeria in the US, and it opened in New York City in 1895.
