How Prepared Is Iowa For A Natural Disaster?
You simply can't predict when the next natural disaster is going to hit. Whether it's a tornado or a flood, weather forecasting still can't pinpoint exactly when it's going to happen. What we can do is prepare like it could happen at any moment. With that thought in mind, just how prepared is Iowa for the next natural disaster? According to a study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, better than most.
The National Health Security Preparedness Index looks at the country's progress in preparing for, responding to and recovering from a natural disaster or other large-scale emergency.
Overall, Iowa scored 6.8 out of a potential 10 for overall preparedness. The national average is 6.7. Iowa scored above the national average in four of the six categories, at the national average in one, and below average in another.
The study showed that the one area the state can improve on is community planning.
