Iowa Capitol Building In Need Of Repair
The Iowa Capitol Building in Des Moines is an iconic Iowa landmark. It's in dire need of repairs and fortunately help is on the way. Nearly $10 million worth of restoration work is set to begin on the building later this summer.
The Senate Appropriations Committee advanced an infrastructure spending bill yesterday that included nearly $10 million for the dome repair project. The measure now heads to the floor of the Senate where it has a good chance of gaining passage.
The Iowa Capitol building was constructed between 1871 and 1886. The center dome is made of brick and iron and covered in real gold. Scaffolding will cover the dome during the project, with repairs taking a year and a half to complete.
