Decades ago, the state fair played host to a plane racing a car, a plane flying through a house, and even a head-to-head train collision. While almost hard to believe, there's video proof of the craziness.

The Iowa State Fair opens next Thursday with 10 concerts over the course of the fair's 10-day run. While they'll all be fun, it's very different from what used to happen in front of the crowds in Des Moines.

My favorite part of the video is the 1932 crash of the Roosevelt train and the Hoover train, preceding that year's presidential election. The video is remarkable and incredibly scary at the same time. I'm shocked that only a few people were injured and this kind of thing was ever done.
