‘Sorry’ Adele: Justin Bieber Claims Hot 100 No. 1 Spot
"Sorry" to Adele fans everywhere: Justin Bieber has officially dethroned the current queen of music sales with his infectious dancehall-lite masterpiece, successfully blocking "Hello" from an eleventh week at No. 1.
According to Billboard, Bieber’s “Sorry” snaked its way up to No. 1 after spending eight total weeks at No. 2. Adele’s “Hello,” meanwhile, had been perched at the top of the chart since its initial release week of November 14, 2015.
The success of “Sorry” (which, by the way, made it onto both our Best Songs and Best Music Videos of 2015 lists) marks a musical milestone for Bieber, as the track is only his second ever to score the top spot on the Hot 100 chart, following the lead behind his last single “What Do You Mean?”
“Sorry” also ties with Outkast’s “The Way You Move” for longest time spent at No. 2 before ultimately claiming the No. 1 spot. Both tracks spent eight weeks at No. 2 altogether, though seven of Bieber's were consecutive.
In further proof that Bieber is reigning over the charts, the Ed Sheeran-penned “Love Yourself,” which also made its way onto Bieber’s latest album Purpose, is currently at No. 3, rounding out a slew of high numbers for the singer.
Are you one of the many listeners who contributed to the recent chart rise of "Sorry"? Is it because you cried so many times to "Hello" toward the end of 2015 that you needed to do a total 180 for the new year? Let us know!
