Impressive First Match in 2016 Scholarship Scramble
Friday night marked the first round of the 5th Annual Collins Community Credit Union Scholarship Scramble. The stage was set at halftime of the Cedar Rapids Titans game for Sam Bries, a Linn-Mar senior, to face off against Bryan Kunde, a Sophomore at Washington High School. Each had the chance to advance for the possibility to win a $500 scholarship and $250 for their school.
Chosen by a coin toss, Sam would go first. Bursting onto the field with speed, he easily nailed the first 2 from either side of the 10-yard line, then hit his next from the 20-yard line, bringing him up to 4 points. His 4th shot was just outside, however, and his 5th was quite on target either. But he raced back for a solid time of 31 seconds.
Next up was Bryan. From his first toss, you instantly knew this was one underclassman you could not underestimate. It was a perfect spiral bullet straight through the uprights, as was the second and the third, tying him Sam, although he seemed a little bit slower in his approach. So just as you were thinking Sam was still in this, Bryan zipped the fourth and then fifth right through before sprinting back. He was 3 seconds slower, but it wouldn't matter as he had 9 points, advancing him to the semi-final face-off on either May 7 or 21. Congrats to both contestants, each receiving cupcakes from Kathy's Pies.
There are only 6 spots remaining, with the next face-off coming up March 26. The next 2 contestants will be named soon. So far, we've heard from students at Jefferson, Kennedy, Marion, Prairie, and Benton Community, but still not Xavier, Center Point-Urbana, Springville, and so many others, as ALL High School students are eligible.
