The 2014 CMT Awards were jam packed with powerhouse performances! We would expect nothing less from a show that honors the best in music videos and television performances in the country music world.  What surprised us though, were the appearances from  some of our favorite pop artists!

Country music has done a lot over the past couple years to appeal to the masses, and it's undoubtedly worked.  How many pop or country stars have had hits in the other format?  Stars like Taylor Swift, LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill, Kelly Clarkson, and so many more. But then there's that next line... the collaboration, which is becoming ever more popular, as the country genre is just about as popular now as the "pop" music genre.   Not like it's anything new, but once Florida Georgia Line "Cruised" with Nelly, maybe someone thought. "Why Not Push the Boundaries."   And I get it, many of us are fans of good catchy tunes, no matter if their pop, country, rock, etc.

Never really thought about it till last night however.  Various nominees included collaborations between Hunter Hayes and Jason Mraz, and Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, let alone all the CMT Crossroads Collaborations, including Dierks Bentley and OneRepublic's "Counting Stars", or The Band Perry with Fall Out Boy doing "My Songs Know...", which is cool and kinds strange. (Not to forget the Katy Perry/Kacey Musgraves Crossroads coming up.)  But the live collaborations last night really got me stirred. While the John Legend collaboration with Hunter Hayes and Jennifer Nettles wasn't my favorite, I guess it kinda made sense.  However, the Jason Derulo collaboration, ummmm??? Even some country guys in the audience seemed confused, while their wives/girlfriends were loving it.

Check out those performances below, as well as some other highlights of the night and those "Crossroads" concerts, and let me know your thoughts.  Are these great ideas, or are they a bit... off?
