Not having a large number of celebrity deaths in your state has to be a good thing. Fortunately, Iowa doesn't have too many. The most famous celebrity death in Iowa's history is called 'The Day The Music Died'. On the night of February 3rd, 1959 a plane carrying the three famous musicians took off from Clear Lake, Iowa. It crashed in a farm field shortly after take-off killing everyone on board.
Most famous for his 'American Gothic' painting, Wood was born in Stone City and resided in Cedar Rapids for a time as well. He died of pancreatic cancer on February 12th, 1942.
Paul Gray was born in California but raised in Des Moines. He was found dead in his hotel room on May 24th, 2010. A needle and pills were scattered across the room. Gray died from an overdose of heroin and also suffered from heart disease.
Cary Grant is a Hollywood legend. The actor was ranked by the American Film Institute as the second greatest male star of all time! While preparing for a performance in Davenport, Iowa, Grant suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in his hotel room and died. He was 82.
Rocky Marciano was the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world from 1952 to 1956. He is the only person to hold the title without suffering a tie or a defeat. Many claim he is the inspiration for the 'Rocky' movies starring Sylvester Stalone. On August 31st, 1969, Rocky was flying on a private plane outside of Newton, Iowa. The pilot tried to make an emergency landing after some rough weather. He hit a tree and the crash killed everyone on board.
