Names Released of Homeowner and Intruder in Deadly Confrontation
Authorities have released more information concerning a home invasion in Palo, in which the suspect was shot and killed by the homeowner.
The scenario began just before 2:55am Monday (Aug. 31) when a small sport utility vehicle collided with a pickup, that was parked on the grass near the intersection of Ridgeview Drive and Timber Road in Palo. The SUV continued to push the pickup into another vehicle, parked in the driveway of a nearby residence.
The driver has been identified as 40 year old Kevin Kawanzel Harris of Cedar Rapids.
At 2:55am, the Linn County Sheriff received numerous 911 calls, reporting a man trying to break into their homes in that same area. Harris is believed to be the suspect. A few minutes earlier, at 2:47am, Harris was spotted on home security video at a home on Timber Road.
At 2:53am, Harris was observed on home security video in the 2700 block of Sage Drive; he was allegedly breaking windows out near the front door of the house. He fled after being confronted by one of the home's occupants, through their home security intercom.
Another resident on Sage Drive reported a person trying to enter their home through the front door. A few minutes later, another homeowner reported a window on the back of their home was broken out.
Then at 3:02 am, a resident on Ridgeview drive called authorities, to tell them her husband just shot a man who broke into their home and threatened them.
Responding deputies found Harris on the floor of the house near the front door; he sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies and medical personnel attempted life saving measures, but Harris was pronounced dead at about 3:15am.
Investigators determined prior to being shot, Harris broke out a window of a young child's bedroom and threw a ceramic flower pot through a large window in the front door.
The homeowner, identified as Jordan Schulte, armed himself with a 9mm pistol, and shot Harris once, as he was threatening his family. The investigation will continue.
