Relocated Local Business Sells Quality Merch at Discount Prices
Everyone is looking to save some money these days, and that's what inspired a hidden treasure trove in Hiawatha that recently celebrated a year in business.
According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the "Ornery Octopus Surplus and Liquidation" store sells a plethora of overstocked items from big-box stores Thursday through Sunday from their location at 760 Kacena Rd. That's what's new. They needed more space and they've gone from 2,400 square feet to 7,500 in their Hiawatha location.
It's a true family-run local business that owners Dawn and Rob Schorg operate with their adult children Trevor and Britney. The Schorgs call the store a "big treasure hunt because you don’t know exactly what we are getting in and that can be a lot of fun"
They emphasize that they are NOT a second-hand "thrift store". From toys to clothing to office supplies, pet supplies, groceries, and more, they offer quality items the box stores just didn't have room for.
The whole thing was inspired by the Schorgs' passion for saving money that they are now passing onto their customers. They don't have any rhyme or reason for the name, according to the Gazette. Rob and Dawn just wanted to call it something as unique as they wanted the store itself to be. They opened March 5, 2020, just before the pandemic. Like many businesses in that predicament, they had to quickly pivot to get the word out, relying primarily on Facebook, and now with more space and an end to the pandemic in sight, they hope to serve even more customers.
It's a cute little store, it's local and the Schorgs welcome you to stop by.
