It may be Friday the 13th week in eastern Iowa, but it's definitely a good thing for pet lovers and local animals looking for a forever home. Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control has an incredible offer this week. You can adopt a dog or cat for just $13. Here are all the details.

The pet adoption event this week is for cats and dogs that are at least one year old. You can adopt one for $13. If the cat or dog you want to adopt needs a rabies vaccination or blood work, that price may be going up some.

If you wish to adopt a pet this week, the process will be a bit different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The shelter is closed, however, you can schedule an appointment to meet the dog or cat you or your family are interested in. Here's how to do it.

  • Visit this website to see the dogs and cats available for adoption.
  • Complete the adoption application HERE.
  • Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control (CRACC) will review your application and, if you're approved, they'll contact you so you can meet the pet you'd like to adopt.
  • You can view up to two pets during your appointment, which will be limited to 30 minutes. Only people living in the household the pet would be adopted into are allowed to attend the pet meet-and-greet at CRACC, which is on the Kirkwood Community College campus at 7241 Washington View Parkway SW. Anyone over age two must wear a face covering.

I highly recommend adopting a shelter pet. We have two at our home, including Chance, who we adopted from CRACC two summers ago. No, he doesn't eat "people" food, but he'd sure like to.

Chance and his brother Cole, who was adopted from another shelter a week later, immediately took to one another. They're still best friends today.
